4 Tips to Keep Your Home Safe this Summer

Studies show that burglaries occur most frequently during the summer – especially July and August. Since we’re quickly approaching these months, you may want to put certain security measures in place in order to protect your home, belongings, and your loved ones.

Here are four things you can do to boost the security of your home:

Strategic landscaping

Though big, tall trees near your home may provide a sense of security, they can actually give burglars easy access to your windows, roof, second-story patios, skylights, etc. To prevent this from happening, make sure to regularly trim the branches on any trees surrounding your home.  Consider installing tall foundation plants and fences around your home, if possible. Gravel beds are also a great deterrent (it’s hard for anyone to tip toe across a bunch of itty bitty rocks without making a lot of noise).

Keep it light and bright at night

At night, it’s a wise idea to keep doors, windows, and blind spots illuminated. Install lights on high exterior walls – this will make it difficult for a thief to reach up and disable them.  When it comes to outdoor lighting, solar powered lights are not recommended due to dimness. If you are concerned with energy efficiency, compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs are a great alternative.  Keep in mind that they take a little longer to reach full brightness – and not all CFL’s are compatible with security systems and motion detection.  Low-voltage light systems, such as 120-volt lights, can be easily connected to home security systems and motion detectors.

Install a security system

According to www.safeguardtheworld.com, homes without security systems are up to 300% more likely to be broken into. Though both wired and wireless home security systems can be monitored by a professional security company, wireless home security systems are gaining more popularity these days. This is because wireless technology allows you to monitor your home’s security remotely via a smartphone or computer.  Wireless systems also don’t require electrical access, which makes installation a lot less complicated. No matter what option you choose, a solid security system will be an annoying, time-consuming obstacle for burglars to get past.

Beef up your windows

If a thief can see inside your home, you are giving them an easy opportunity to “window shop” for any valuables that are left out in the open.  All they need is one quick peek of a laptop, jewelry, cash, electronics, or any other expensive item(s) they want to get their hands on. Besides locking doors and installing a security system, the best thing you to avoid a home robbery is have security window film installed.  Security window film will not only prevent a thief from seeing inside your property, but the film itself makes it more difficult for burglars to break through glass. In fact, our security window film can resist blows of up to 400 foot pounds!
