Ceramic coatings for wheels
When most people think about how tires look after they’ve been cleaned, they imagine a smooth and clear surface. However, the surface of a wheel becomes dirty over time from road grime and brake dust. If not properly maintained by significant cleaning and maintenance, wheels become dull, hazy, and prone to scratches.
You can always clean the wheels with maybe a dirty rag for about 5 minutes. Eventually, you’ll get sick of it and decide to go do something else. You’re not going to be happy when you find out that your wheel cleaner is not as effective as you thought it would be. With nano-ceramic coating, there’s no downtime and the wheels are spotless.
Why should I ceramic coat my wheels?
Your vehicle’s wheels are incredibly vulnerable to damage. They’re not only the most important parts of your car but also the most vulnerable. When those wheels and your brakes come into contact with road debris, brake dust can easily be transferred to them.
Brake dust is not an easy thing to remove from your wheels. Many of the techniques used by people to clean their cars won’t effectively tackle brake dust buildup on their wheels. Brake dust also develops a unique pattern on different wheel types, making it difficult to remove with standard tools and methods. UV rays can also damage your wheels over time.
Wheels are vital to the look and style of your vehicle. So make sure they’re always in fine condition by using a premium ceramic coating by ceramic professionals every five years or so. By getting this level of protection, your wheels will stay clean with a high-gloss shine for a long time.
What is the best ceramic coating protection for wheels?
If there was a way to take something that is so specific and make it universally applicable, people would probably be clamoring for it. Unfortunately, there isn’t a universal coating solution out there that can take on all the extreme situations other than ION ceramic coating by Scorpion. In fact, there are multiple types of ceramic coatings specifically designed to protect wheels and marine equipment. However, ION is one of the most durable and enduring ceramic coatings available for a variety of applications.
Scorpion ceramic coating does everything from motorcycles to truck detailing. The brand offers a wide range of protection and maintenance products. The new flagship is ceramic surface coatings. Scorpion ceramic surface coating has been designed for use on wheels and marine vehicles. However, there are a huge number of other uses that it can be applied to, such as motorcycle exhausts, golf club shafts, and race car racing rims. ION surface coating can easily take on the most extreme conditions and last for years. It is a permanent protective coating that can be applied to structures that will resist extreme heat.
How much does ceramic coating wheels cost
Professional ceramic coating for wheels can cost hundreds of dollars per application, and most of that cost is tied up in expensive labor for a job that doesn’t take an expert’s touch. While a tire or auto body shop will usually do a fantastic job on your wheels, you can learn to coat your wheels at home without overpaying for a technician.
DIY ceramic coating products are pricier than many automotive solutions, but they’re made to use over and over again, and they keep your car looking its best. One bottle of ION ceramic coating will last your car for tens of thousands of miles, reducing the cost to mere pennies per mile over the life of the product.
Does ceramic coating help with brake dust
As a car owner, you know the importance of keeping your wheels clean and shiny. You often spend considerable time cleaning off road grime and washing your tires every week. This process is a real problem for many car owners. Ceramic coating is a quick, easy, and guaranteed way to maintain your wheels. If you don’t have time for regular cleanings, ceramic coating can make the tedious routine much easier.
While some stains can be removed with a bit of elbow grease, the ceramic coating layer on your rims makes them easier to clean and maintain. With less maintenance time required, you can spend more time on the road or in the car enjoying your custom wheels rather than spending much time washing them.
Can you mess up ceramic coating for wheels?
You never should use an iron remover or wheel shampoo cleaner on a ceramic coating. And if you really need to get them clean, soap and water work just fine. You may think that foam cleaners or degreasers are great at breaking down dirt, but they can permanently stain your wheel. Never use any kind of cleaner on ceramic wheels. They’ll eventually look dirty, even if you do take the time to clean them with soap and water.
How do you prepare a wheel for ceramic coating?
We firmly believe that wheels should be removed from a vehicle before doing any kind of heavy work. Only do this if you are working on a single jack stand and/or do not plan to jack or work on the vehicle’s suspension. With one end of the jack in the air, you can remove wheels and debris easily.
If you do not remove the wheels, Applying a Nano ceramic coating on dirty wheels will not work correctly. Your brakes may be coated in ceramic which is a tough radiant barrier that can protect your brakes from oxidation and dust buildup. Ceramic coatings are particularly useful when vehicles are parked for long periods of time. If you need to keep your car more clean, simply apply a chemical or wax cleaner to the surfaces.
When your wheels are clean, you’re ready to apply the ceramic coating. If you want a smooth finish, you need to ONLY apply this product in a safe and controlled environment. You should NOT do it inside or directly under the sun; it is best to do the work outside in the shade.
When you apply the ceramic coating, be sure to put it in two areas: on the inside of the wheel and outside (on the hubs). Before you put your rims back on after installation, make sure that they slide easily and that there is no slippage as you tighten the bolts. When you’re finished, let your wheels sit overnight so that they can cool and contract. Don’t coat ceramic coating inside the lug nut or bolt holes on the wheel. When reinstalling the wheels on the vehicle, don’t apply the coating to the inboard side of the wheels. Keep in mind that ceramic coatings are designed to be applied to the outside of wheels. You don’t want them dusting up threads where they secure to hubs, nuts, and bolts.
Can you ceramic coat powder-coated wheels?
Electrostatic Powder Coating (EP Curing) is an electrostatic repulsion process that combines two basic processes: electrostatic attraction and powder coating. The powder that sticks is made of a powder and a liquid, which are essentially the base and the binding agent. This is an electrically-bonded powder that sticks to materials via electrostatic attraction in a process called electro-static attraction. As the product is sprayed onto a surface, it provides an initial bond, which is then enforced through heat from a kiln. To protect against corrosion, powder coating helps to prevent the build-up of oxidizing substances. Powder coating acts as an impenetrable barrier that prevents contaminants from getting through and damaging the thin sheet metal. It works by coating itself onto the metal.
When powder coating was replaced with a solution of fine metals, known as ‘electroless’ coating, it reduced the emission of VOCs. “Electro-less” means that the paint and its final coating are made without the use of toxic chemicals like lead or cadmium. Most importantly, this new method does not emit harmful VOCs which cause smog and warming of our atmosphere.
If you’ve ever seen a car with a powder coating, then you know there is no comparison to paint. But more than that, powder coating is much heavier than other finishes on the market. So, even though the answer to this question is “no,” powder coating for rims is a great idea if you can afford it.
Can you ceramic coat matte wheels?
Glossy finishes are typically added to rims that have a dull or matte finish. Matte and satin rims provide excellent protection from the elements, but they can tend to look dull unless they have a higher gloss finish applied to them. Ion will not turn a matt or satin finish wheel glossy – it will offer the same high quality protection without the shine or added gloss.
First, we clean the wheels. It’s important that we clean off dust and oils from previous detailing processes so that our polishes and waxes don’t end up damaged or smeared. This is critical to letting them work properly. While a shop rag will work, we recommend a high quality microfiber towel that can really grab this sticky residue.
Once the cleaning is complete, let’s begin applying ION. Be sure to wear gloves to protect your skin. As we apply, be mindful of areas where spills may happen and wash your hands after contact.
Take a look at the wheels. Are you sure you are finished spreading ION? It is extremely important not to leave any bare areas when coating wheels — a quick wipe with a paper towel will remove all excess. With the roughness of the texture, you will want to apply heavy coat- ing so that the surface can absorb it. Be sure the surface is dry before removing excess coating by wiping off in one direction and then in another.
Can you ceramic coat over Chrome?
Yes indeed. Ceramic coating is like a clear top coat for your paint. The ION system offers more protection because it effectively seals the wet paint during application, and also repairs minor defects like scratches and swirls. We love using CMX ION on all shiny surfaces to get that beautiful mirror finish on vehicle exteriors.
How to Keep Ceramic Coated Wheels Clean
Washing your tires is not always easy. Sometimes brake dust can bond to the surface of your wheel, making it very difficult to wash off all the contamination from the surface. Also, because wheels are round and come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, cleaning them can be particularly tricky even with the tools you are used to using.
The best way to prevent wheel cleaning from becoming a more time-consuming and stressful process is to have a product that not only cleans but also protects your vehicle’s wheels. Products that contain wheel cleaner, wheel cleaner deodorizing agent, wheel cleaner detergent, or tire cleaner have multiple benefits over traditional methods. They keep the wheels clean and free of contaminants and dirt at all times, keeping them shining and looking like new. This will save you money and time over the life of your vehicle.
Like any ceramic coated wheel part, we recommend that you wait at least two weeks before washing your car. But, the cool thing about ceramic coating wheels is that cleaning them is easier than ever. We recommend using a pH neutral car wash shampoo that doesn’t contain wax to wash your wheels. The coating is going to block the potential of brake dust and road grime from sticking to your wheel.
How do you remove old ceramic coating?
Removing ceramic coatings can be intimidating for car owners. Make sure your technician is experienced in removing ceramic coatings without damaging the paint or creating swirl marks. It’s also important to verify that your ceramic coating removal method won’t cause swirl marks or additional paint damage. Removing ceramic coatings only works especially well if you have extensive previous experience in paint correction. It also depends on the surface, whether it be a car’s body, glass, plastic trim, or anywhere it’s applied.
A ceramic coating bonds to a vehicle’s painted surface and can withstand the acid fallout of rain and abrasion from dust. In fact, it’s much more durable than waxing or other paint decontamination measures. When using the above-mentioned protocol, you must wait until the captive decontaminating agent has had a chance to significantly deteriorate before removing it.
Almost every automotive surface is sensitive to alkaline products. Car owners should not use strong disinfectants, degreasers, or other harsh cleaners around car paint. The clear coat, also called the paint layer closest to your body’s skin, deteriorates quickly when exposed to strong detergents or cleaners. Many clear coats have surfaces that can become chewed up by aggressive dirt and grime residue from various cleaning solutions.
With that in mind, you can mix (homemade, of course) a DIY of wheel and brake cleaner diluted 5:1 with ordinary water. Mix thoroughly in a spray bottle and spray the body panel. Then grab a new piece of clay and clay the surface. Agitate the product to work the surface and pick up a new piece of clay to cleanse it off. You’ll be surprised at how easy regular clay is for this part of the job, and how surprisingly effective it works. Make sure to work quickly and use light pressure. When you’re done, rinse thoroughly with a power washer.
