Car Window Tinting – How to Choose the Best Shade
Tinting your vehicle’s windows can give it a customized look. It can also protect occupants and the interior of your car from sun damage. If you have decided to tint your windows, you might be wondering how to choose the right shade. There are a couple of things that are helpful to know about car tint shades to help you choose the right tint for your car or truck.
Visible Light Transmission
Visible light transmission is measured based on the percentage of light that is visible through the tinted glass higher VLT means there is more daylight in a space which, if designed properly, can offset electric lighting and its associated cooling loads.
The higher the VLT, the lighter the tint. Lighter VLTs also provide less protection against heat and UV damage. Darker tints have a lower VLT. The darkest tint is 5 percent VLT. This is usually referred to as “limo” tint. Although darker tints provide better protection against the sun, they may reduce visibility.
Aside from the factors above, there are other things that go into calculating VLT. The glass on your vehicle’s window already has a VLT of its own and this is taken into account when tinting your windows.
What Are the Laws in Your State?
Each state has varying laws on car tint shades. This chart from the International Window Film Association has a handy list of the different laws in each state regarding window tint. It is important to choose car tint shades that are compliant with your state’s laws for safety reasons and to help you avoid legal problems.
How Does Car Tint Shades Affect Resale Value?
The shade of your tint doesn’t impact the resale value of your car as much as the quality of the tint. Choose a high-quality tint that will last and provide protection for many years. Also, have a professional install your car tint shades. Although there are many DIY car tints on the market, most look poor and a shoddy tint job will negatively affect the value of your car. On the other hand, a high-quality, professionally installed tint can increase your car’s resale value.
